Gordon Bess

REDEYE was created by Gordon Bess in 1967 as a parody of the Western genre at a time when Western locales were very popular. The fact that Bess lived in Utah and Idaho for most of his life allowed him to include details that gave his feature some verisimilitude. Of course, no one in the real Wild West ever saw such an inept group of Native Americans as Bessrsquos cast of characters. His readers, however, delighted in the mild West exploits of Redeye, the put-upon chief of the motley Chickiepan Indian tribe, his family and members of their village. Some of those were Tanglefoot, a dimwitted brave that has captured the heart of Redeye's daughter, Tawneee; Medicine Man, the tribal doctor; Loco, Redeye's cowardly warhorse; and Redeye's wife, Mawsquaw, famous for her barely edible cooking. The strip was later continued by Bill Yates and Mel Casson.
